Wirral reveals plans to go green with new fleet policy proposals

Wirral Council has proposed a new Green Fleet Policy to improve public health and support climate targets.

The council’s environment, climate emergency and transport committee will next week consider the proposals which seek to deliver more sustainable fleet operations, with the aim of boosting value for money and air quality.

To achieve its objective of reducing vehicle emissions, the council has pledged to introduce cleaner zero-emission vehicles, digital tools, and modern infrastructure if the policy is approved.

After producing more than 512 tonnes of CO₂e from its fleet in 2024-25, the council has said the plan will strive to minimise this impact and advance national climate targets.

The local authority has also confirmed its intention to increase operational efficiency and reliability through the new policy, while also advancing its broader goals of meeting net zero by 2030.

In a statement yesterday, the council said the policy ‘reflects Wirral’s commitment to leading by example, demonstrating how practical, everyday changes in local authority operations can drive meaningful progress in addressing the climate emergency.’
