Liverpool-based waste management company, Gaskells, is equipping its refuse trucks, skip lorries and vans with the latest five-camera CCTV equipment with hard disk recording and cyclist sensor safety technology to create a super-safe fleet.

Lynne Eatock, transport manager at Gaskells, said: 'Safety is paramount for us and we want to do everything we can to avoid accidents and keep vulnerable road users safe.

'Our vehicles operate in extremely busy inner-city areas where there are a lot of cyclists and pedestrians. We also want to help and protect our drivers and we feel installing this equipment will be of great assistance to them'

Each vehicle will be fitted with the RV4 five-camera hard disk recording equipment and the Cyclear  cyclist sensor and driver warning system from vehicle safety technology company, Innovative Safety Systems (ISS).

ISS designs, installs and maintains a wide range of safety equipment, most of which is manufactured in the UK.

Cyclear has an audible speaker that sounds to let cyclists and vulnerable road users know when the vehicle is turning left. This is coupled with a sensor arrangement that detects cyclists and alerts drivers.

The RV4 camera recording system enables continual monitoring and review of every collection round and will store up to a month's worth of activity at any one time. As well as helping to develop and promote health and safety best practice by staff, the system also helps with the investigation of vehicle or property damage claims, complaints, incorrectly reported missed bins and generally unsafe or anti-social behaviour.

Gaskells has also bought the LANlink system from ISS which automatically downloads footage remotely by WiFi as the vehicles return to depot. With LANlink comes a detailed daily vehicle health check report which immediately highlights any faults within the system or cameras.

Mike Crowther, sales manager at ISS, said: 'It's fantastic that Gaskells are enhancing the safety of their entire fleet.

'The great thing is that we can quickly and easily retrofit our equipment to a wide range of vehicles, irrespective of how old they are. We will continue to work closely with Gaskells to provide any additional equipment training or after sales service as and when they need us'
