New zero-emission vehicles to enhance Sheffield’s bus network

Sheffield is to see the introduction of over 180 zero-emission buses into its transport network.

The scheme is backed by £59m from the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA), as well as £33.4m from the Government, with the aim of swapping diesel vehicles for more sustainable alternatives.

It is part of the Government’s broader £73m funding package for 484 zero emission vehices across the country, with the aim of assisting the journey to net zero and generating green jobs.

To support the delivery of the scheme, the SYMCA is delivering a further boost of almost £26m that will secure upgraded infrastructure for the vehicles.

According to Mayor Oliver Coppard and Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander, the 186 new buses will reduce harmful emissions, resulting in cleaner air and improved transport connections for local people.

Mayor Oliver Coppard said: ‘Public transport in South Yorkshire used to be world class. But our buses have been broken for too long.

‘Now, we’re getting on with the job of delivering the promise of a bigger, better transport network, starting with our huge ambition for better buses.’
