Are you passionate about developing people and ensuring compliance across a complex operational service? We are looking for a highly motivated adaptable Highways Training Officer to join our Highways Training Centre team. This role is integral to supporting Derbyshire County Council’s Highways Operations service by delivering professional, high-quality Street Works and Highways training programmes.

You will deliver training across various Derbyshire sites as required. You will contribute to the development and delivery of high quality, engaging, industry-aligned course content and support trainees’ in achieving nationally recognised qualifications to a very high standard. Your expertise will directly enhance operational capability across the organisation.

About this role

  • Carry out professional and high-quality training in collaboration with and directed by the Highways Training Compliance and Coordination Lead and written in the training plan.
  • Deputise for the Highways Training Compliance and Coordination Lead as and when required.
  • Support Highways Training Compliance and Coordination Lead as required in the management of training records and other related duties.
  • Keep high-quality accurate and up to date records.
  • Participate and support in in-house and external audits.
  • Participate in planning and preparing appropriate courses, teaching materials and requesting plant hire.
  • Teach high-quality practical and theory Street Works and Highways sessions.
  • Ensure all training is delivered to a very high standard and is compliant with all current legislation and in line with the aims of the Derbyshire Highways service.
  • Deliver high-quality assessment of practical and theoretical coursework and submit to the relevant accreditation body as required.
  • Maintain the fabric of the classroom and create a professional learning environment.
  • Keep up to date with new initiatives relevant to highways operations and ensure own qualifications are up to date and valid.
  • Responsible and accountable for the high standard and quality of own training provided.
  • Ensure all Health and Safety issues are reported and addressed promptly.
  • Ensure all appropriate risk assessments are carried out for all practical activities.
  • Ensure correct use and care of equipment and resources is maintained, report faulty equipment promptly.
  • Manage resources effectively and ensure appropriate value for money.

 

We are seeking candidates with a practical background in highways, utilities, or street works.

Experience in the following areas is highly desirable:

  • Experience in training and assessment.
  • Experience of working within a highways or engineering service environment.
  • Occupational competence and sector specific expertise.
  • Chapter 8 Traffic Management qualifications.
  • CAT & Genny, experienced in how to work safely to avoid underground cables.
  • Traffic Management Signage & Traffic Light Set Up.
  • Experience in excavating roads or pavements, and surface reinstatement.
  • Involvement in internal or external audit and regulatory inspection processes.

 

You will be flexible, organised, and able to manage your workload effectively to meet strict deadlines. Strong communication skills and the ability to work well with learners and colleagues are essential. A working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications would be an advantage.

Please note: The ability to speak fluent English is required to ensure effective communication with learners, clients, and members of the public.
