Councils cut carbon emissions with new EV

A new electric waste collection and street cleansing vehicle is due to cut councils’ carbon emissions by 70%.

The new vehicle is to support South Oxfordshire and Vale of White Horse district councils in reaching their net zero targets by creating expected savings of more than 13 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually.

According to the Vale of White Horse District Council, the IVECO eDaily caged tipper will be the second electric vehicle (EV) in the councils’ waste collection and street cleansing fleet. It will support both districts in delivering services such as litter bin emptying, street cleansing, and fly tip clearance.

The EV will serve as a replacement for a diesel tipper truck, resulting in savings of 70% in carbon emissions, as well as ensuring a quieter operational experience.

Cllr Sue Cooper, South Oxfordshire District Council cabinet member for environment, said: ‘Making the switch to electric vehicles is not easy due to the size of our districts and the challenges of the lengthy rural waste collection routes the trucks must complete.

‘However, this electric vehicle continues the progress towards our net zero goals, which will be good for our residents and for the environment.’

Cllr Dr Robert Clegg, Vale of White Horse District Council cabinet member for Environmental Services, Climate Action and Nature Recovery, added that the electric food waste truck that was introduced 18 months ago has produced significant carbon emission savings.
