Wirral Council has declared its winter service plan in effect, placing its fleet and crews on 24/7 standby to combat ice and snow across the borough.
The council’s salting operation, based at the Salt Dome in Birkenhead, deploys around 2,100 tonnes of rock salt over 10 pre-planned routes during an average winter.
Of the borough’s 730 miles of public roads, 288 miles—primarily major thoroughfares, emergency access routes and public transport links—will be prioritised for treatment.
The council’s crews will remain on round the clock standby until the end of the winter service season in April 2026.
