The vehicles will be charged using solar panel-generated electricity sourced from the roof of the Riverbank House in Bideford.

Cllr Peter Hames, Torridge District Council's lead member for climate change, commented: ‘It was an easy decision to invest in electric vehicles.

‘Not only are there long-term cost savings, but this will contribute to our on-going efforts to be carbon neutral by 2030.’

The council confirmed the Northam Burrows rangers will use one of the new vehicles to assist in carrying out park preservation tasks, as well as at volunteering events.

The local authority’s estates team will use the two other vans to manage the pannier markets and complete standard maintenance work.

Cllr Peter Hames added: ‘We will be actively looking to replace further diesel vehicles with electric, as and where appropriate, when they come up for review.’
