Surrey County Council is rolling out its winter readiness plan, with 39 fully commissioned gritting vehicles — including tongue-in-cheekly named machines like ‘Sub-Zero Hero’ and ‘Grit Granny’.
These state-of-the-art gritters will be on duty around the clock to keep major roads and high-priority routes clear as frost and snow set in, according to the council.
Each machine is equipped with high-capacity salt spreaders and modern route-optimisation tech, ready to deploy at a moment’s notice. With winter weather expected to be challenging this year, the council said it is prioritising rapid response on key commuter corridors and critical links.
Matt Furniss, Cabinet Member for Highways, Transport and Economic Growth said, ‘When temperatures plummet, our gritter drivers across the county are ready and prepared to work around the clock to keep traffic moving on our busiest routes. This year we more drivers on standby than ever before.
‘Our Immediate Response Centre will also continue to support communities 24/7 and we will work closely with the Met Office to monitor weather conditions throughout the season.’
