St Helens Borough councillors are set to consider plans to replace part of the council’s waste collection fleet with six new vehicles, including one electric refuse truck.

The proposals, due before Cabinet next week, form part of a rolling replacement programme and support the council’s Net Zero commitment to cut carbon emissions. Cllr Tracy Dickinson, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods and Environmental Services, said the new vehicles would replace older models nearing the end of their operational life.

‘We have a fleet of 25 waste collection vehicles which are replaced on a rolling basis. If the plans are approved next week these new additions will replace a batch of vehicles which are coming towards the ends of their operational life having put many miles on the clock in delivering our waste collection services over the last seven years,’ she said.

‘Having a more modern fleet, which we manage in-house, means less need for preventative maintenance that then reduces possible impacts on how waste is collected from residents’ homes.’

Five of the new vehicles will feature lower-emission engines, while the electric vehicle will be supported by charging infrastructure at the Hardshaw Brook Depot.

Cllr Dickinson added that future fleet refreshes are expected to include more electric vehicles as charging capacity and cost efficiencies improve.
