Nine-year-old Jaxx Robertson, a pupil at Whinhill Primary, prepares hot rolls and snacks each week for refuse workers Brian Copeland and David Millar.

His thoughtful gestures, supported with help from his mum Lucy Gallacher, and their uplifting bond have become a viral sensation, with millions of views on social media.

Jaxx, who has autism and ADHD, says ‘bin lorry Wednesday’ has boosted his confidence and brought him out of his shell.

In recognition of his kindness, Provost Drew McKenzie presented Jaxx with a special award during a VIP visit to the Pottery Street Recycling Centre, where he toured the depot, met an eagle used to deter seagulls, and even climbed behind the wheel of a bin lorry.

Mr Copeland, who has worked for Inverclyde Council for 12 years, said: ‘I'm just happy that wee Jaxx is happy and that it's helped his special needs and brought him on leaps and bounds.

‘It’s nice when you get someone like Jaxx who lifts your spirits and it's nice when something is highlighted – it’s like a wee ray of sunshine.’

Provost McKenzie added: ‘In times of seemingly never-ending doom and gloom and intolerance towards others, it’s great to be able to shine a spotlight on the good that still exists out there and celebrate that.’
