As part of a new service, food waste will be collected weekly, while the frequency of rubbish collections will be reduced to fortnightly.

The system has already been rolled out in mid and south east Cornwall, where recycling rates have increased, although the fortnightly frequency of recycling collections has been maintained.

Under its Simpler Recycling plans, the previous government said councils should introduce weekly food waste collections for most households across England by April 2026.

The council’s service director for regulatory services, Carol Maclellan, said: ‘Our new food waste, recycling and rubbish service will help residents in west Cornwall increase their recycling and cut down on waste as well as recycle their food waste for the first time.?

‘All this helps to lower our carbon footprint, lessen our impact on the planet and contribute to a sustainable Cornwall.’?

The new service will be rolled out across the whole of Cornwall by 2025.
