Unlike traditional handheld brushes, the new body-worn models distribute weight evenly for easier handling and reduced strain on staff, according to the council.

The equipment is a mix of electric and petrol-powered machines, with the electric versions offering zero emissions and lower noise, supporting the council’s sustainability goals while improving conditions for workers and residents.

The council also said the machines will cut the time needed to clear areas from an hour to just minutes, and will tackle terrain that was previously difficult to maintain.

Cllr John McElroy, Cabinet Member for Environment and Transport, said the investment would ‘make a real difference in keeping Gateshead clean and welcoming.’
