Backed by funding from the Department for Transport’s Zero Emission Bus Regional Areas (ZEBRA) scheme, the five new Volvo BZL electric buses will be serving the Dover Fastrack network, which provides quick transit between Whitfield and Dover town centre.

The council is delivering the scheme alongside Stagecoach South East and Dover District Council, as part of KCC’s wider aims to enhance transport services across the county.

According to KCC, the vehicles can complete up to 300-kilometre journeys on a single charge, as well as offering USB Type B and Type C charging points and digital information screens.

They are also fitted with accessibility features such as low-floor access and dedicated wheelchair spaces.

The Dover Fastrack has ‘seen strong and continued growth in users’ since it began operating in November 2024, with the council emphasising that the rollout of the new vehicles is a ‘key milestone’ in the development of the service.

Peter Osborne, Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, said: ‘The introduction of these electric buses is an important step in strengthening public transport for the Dover area. This project reflects the strong partnership between KCC, Stagecoach South East and Dover District Council, and demonstrates our shared commitment to providing reliable, modern and high quality services for residents, businesses and visitors.

‘As the Whitfield area continues to develop, we fully anticipate the service to continue to grow and play its part a key role in stimulating the local economy, with a strong focus on increasing footfall in the town centre.’

Joel Mitchell, Managing Director of Stagecoach South East, added that the move is a major investment for not only Dover, but the entirety of Kent.

Mr Mitchell explained that the buses will offer both a smoother and quieter travel experiences, while also minimising environmental impact and supporting the sustainability of the region’s transport network.
