The council covers a mixed area of sparse rural properties, historic settlements and housing set out on ancient street patterns.
It said there were places the 15- and 26-tonne vehicles in its fleet could not reach, and it had resorted to using ‘walking bins and bags’ in some instances, affecting the standard of its service.
King’s Lynn and West Norfolk trialled Terberg Matec’s Orus Twin body solution on a 7.5T Isuzu chassis, which was a success, particularly in navigating tight bends and medieval layouts.
The authority said the traditional diesel engine of its Isuzu 7.5T was ‘sensible’ given the 550 square miles of countryside, historic villages, and coastline it covers.
The Orus twin pack has been deployed to garden and alternate weekly collections and plans are being made to use the vehicle for other waste services, including rural litter bin runs.
The council said using the Orus would save time and fuel compared to the larger vehicles on its fleet.
