The total cost of the council’s 20 new vehicles is over £3.3m, with a potential to expand the fleet to 36 trucks depending on the success of the recycling scheme.

A council spokesperson said: ‘In order to meet the UK Government deadline for the new service of the 1 April 2026, it is proposed that these vehicles will be diesel based.

‘However, to minimise the carbon emissions, we are looking into the use of hydrogenated vegetable oil (HVO) and whether it is a viable option for fuelling these vehicles.’

The council says its use of HVO fuel would result in 98% less CO2 emissions than diesel, serving as a sustainable alternative to traditional fuel sources and helping to create ‘a greener, cleaner Liverpool’.
