Residents have been encouraged to enter Lancashire County Council’s gritter naming competition.

The local authority has urged members of the community to help name the 10 new vehicles that will deliver winter road maintenance services for the first time this year.
The council revealed its hopes for each vehicle to have a unique name and asked residents to check which titles were already in use on the local authority’s website, where competition entries can be submitted, alongside Facebook and via post.
The local authority is tasked with looking after roughly 1,500 miles of Lancashire’s roads, delivering efficient treatment to the priority gritting network when a freeze is anticipated.
Cllr Warren Goldsworthy, cabinet member for Highways and Transport, said: ‘Our gritters are among our hardest-working vehicles, helping to keep our roads safe through the toughest winter conditions.
He added: ‘Our highways teams do an incredible job of keeping Lancashire's main routes open whatever the weather, often working throughout the night over what can be a very long winter from October to April.
‘Seeing a gritter go by on a freezing night is a reassuring sight for everyone, and I'm sure that spotting the name on the door of the cab raises many smiles.’
