Primary school students have helped to name South Lanarkshire Council’s new fleet of gritters.

Following hundreds of entries to the competition held by the council, the winning pupils and their chosen monikers for the gritters have been announced by the local authority.
The final names selected are as follows: Taylor Drift, Luke Grittler, Chilly Connolly, Hagrit, Snowmandalorian, Paddington Brrr, Hello Gritty and Salt and Chilly.
Cllr Robert Brown, Chair of the Enterprise Resources Committee, credited the pupils for their ‘inventiveness and originality’ and thanked all participants of the competition.
‘The eight names that have been chosen are absolutely wonderful. I am looking forward to spotting them around South Lanarkshire over the coming months and I hope they put a big smile on the face of everyone who sees them as they pass by’, he said.
Colin Park, the council’s Head of Roads, Transportation and Fleet Services, added that the gritters ‘play a vital part throughout the winter months in keeping roads across South Lanarkshire safe and usable for drivers’, as well as completing duties such as sand transportation and asphalt spreading when weather conditions are no longer icy.
Mr Park said the council’s online gritter tracker will enable locals to monitor the whereabouts and progress of the vehicles from the beginning of October.
