The bin crew were praised for quickly dumping two tonnes of smouldering rubbish in a nearby car park, to which firefighters were called to put out the blaze.

The local authority said the fire was one of several in waste collected by bin lorries and at household waste recycling sites in East Riding over the past few years, causing thousands of pounds worth of damage.

It urged residents to take vapes and other items with batteries to designated bins at household waste recycling sites.

Cabinet member for environment and transport Paul West said: ‘Please never ever put vapes or batteries of any type in your household bins. We have said this so many times.’

He added: ‘Thankfully no one was hurt and the lorry wasn’t damaged.

‘I’m full of praise for this bin crew for their fast actions in preventing this incident from becoming much worse than it was.’
