The £18.9m move will be delivered in partnership with First Bus, which will provide funding of £8.9m to support the investment, while Norfolk's Bus Service Improvement Plan grant is set to subsidise the further £4.9m.

Following the addition of the vehicles, the council’s fleet will consist of 100 buses, with the new double-deckers due to hit the streets of Norwich and Great Yarmouth by autumn next year, promoting ‘greener public transport’ across the county.

In a statement, the council confirmed that upgraded infrastructure will also be delivered to support the new vehicles at their depots.

Cllr Graham Plant, cabinet member for highways, infrastructure and transport, said; ‘This is a landmark moment for public transport in Norfolk.’

He added: ‘We know from feedback that passengers in Norwich are already enjoying the benefits that come with travelling on an electric vehicle - and now even more people will get to enjoy the enhanced passenger experience with these new buses operating in Great Yarmouth and on routes out to Mulbarton and Horsford.’
