Birmingham City Council’s new ‘state-of-the-art’ waste fleet has been launched.
The upgrade has seen the council’s ageing and hired fleet vehicles replaced, with a £30m investment supporting the purchase of newly branded refuse collection vehicles (RCVs).
According to the local authority, the move represents the ‘largest single procurement of refuse collection vehicles (RCVs) ever undertaken in the UK’.
To boost air quality, the diesel-fuelled vehicles are ‘fully compliant’ with Birmingham’s Clean Air Zone requirements, as well as the current emissions standards.
The vehicles are also installed with 360-degree camera systems and low-level access points to minimise risk to both staff and members of the public.
With the RCVs and their branding provided by local companies and manufacturers, the council’s fleet upgrade has boosted the job market and economy in the Midlands.
Cllr Majid Mahmood, Cabinet Member for Environment and Transport, said: ‘The arrival of this fully branded, state-of-the-art fleet is a big step forward for Birmingham. These vehicles will give our crews the tools they need to deliver a more reliable, efficient service while also supporting the city’s environmental goals.
‘We’re proud to be investing in modern equipment that benefits both residents and staff, as well as backing local businesses and jobs here in the Midlands.’
