Biffa and Fleetclear have teamed up to ensure the waste management company’s heavy goods vehicle (HGV) fleet in London is fully compliant with the new Direct Vision Standard (DVS) regulations.

Biffa required upgrades across 111 vehicles at 19 depots where operations cover the Greater London area. Following a tender process and a successful bid by Fleetclear every applicable vehicle has now been retrofitted with the Fleetclear Progressive Safe System (PSS).
Under the terms of the DVS regulations, which were updated on 28 October 2024, all vehicles over 12t require an HGV safety permit to operate in Greater London. The aim of the regulations is to minimise the risks to vulnerable road users and reduce fatalities caused by poor driver vision.
Only HGVs rated three stars and above, or those fitted with a Progress Safe System (PSS), are now permitted on London’s streets.
Zoë Smith, Fleet Development Manager at Biffa, said Fleetclear had gone ‘above and beyond’ to ensure Biffa’s fleet remained compliant, adding they had received great feedback from operational teams.
