Shrewsbury gives street sweepers fresh look and crowd-picked names

The new designs and names for Shrewsbury Town Council’s street sweepers have been revealed.

The redesign of the sweepers was achieved in collaboration with a local graphic designer called Alison Staples (Romy Design), who created the artwork for the vehicles.

A statement from the council explains that the updated street cleaning logo and custom-made vector design display ‘iconic elements of Shrewsbury’, to produce ‘a distinctive visual identity for the street cleaning service’.

The help of a local company – Sign and Poster – was also enlisted to support the council in producing and installing the vehicle wraps, as well as emblazoning the new names on the sweepers.

Based on the results of a public vote, the council’s 15-tonne road sweeper has been called ‘Sweep Caroline’, with the 3.5-tonne vehicle being dubbed ‘Optimus Grime’.

The refresh follows the handover of street cleaning duties from Shropshire Council to Shrewsbury on April 1, which saw the town council become responsible for delivering the service that covers 600+ miles of roads, footpaths, and cycle lanes in the area.

Helen Ball, Town Clerk, Shrewsbury Town Council, said: ‘These vehicles are a visible symbol of the Town Council’s commitment to keeping Shrewsbury clean, welcoming and attractive for residents and visitors alike.’

Ms Ball expressed thanks to Sign and Poster and Alison Staples, in addition to the town’s street cleaning staff, commending the ‘dedication and pride’ they take in their work.
